Court of Appeal Justices Celebrate Completion of Election Petitions Appeals

On Wednesday August17, 2022, Justices of the Court of Appeal held a luncheon at Hotel Africana to celebrate the completion of election petition appeals in a timely manner.

The Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Richard Buteera, pointed out that the trend of election petitions spending five years in Court is now history. He noted that 162Election Petition Appeals were filed at the Court, and were disposed within a period of four months. 

He expressed his excitement towards Hon. Justice Kenneth Kakuru's withdrawal of his retirement letter and thanked him for his input even when he was on sick leave. "Your absence was felt but now we are happy that you are here. He said majorly he was grateful that Hon. Justice Kakuru's health had improved. 

He congratulated Justice Susan Kanyange upon her elevation. Adding that her growth was well deserved as she is a hard worker, who puts time in her work and is very disciplined. "When you come to the higher bench you are not coming to relax, there is more work and responsibility, stay focused you will make it," he said.

Hon. Justice Kakuru applauded the DCJ for steering the Court, in the way work is done, the approach and the way problems are solved. "We should congratulate ourselves that we have reached where we are and can groom people continuously in the profession to take over from us," he said. He congratulated the Justices on having concluded the Election Petitions. 

Hon. Justice Kanyange appreciated all the cooperation and teamwork she received from the Justices. "My Lord DCJ thank you for mentoring me, the one thing I have learnt from the DCJ is how to solve problems," she said.

She appreciated the DCJ for being part of her journey to becoming a Judge. She expressed her happiness for the return of Hon. Justice Kakuru to the Court and thanked Hon. Justice Stephen Musota for the guidance given to her.

Hon. Justice Musota said he watched Hon. Justice Kanyange grow and rise through the ranks. Adding that the success of the constitutional petition appeals session hinged on her dutiful work. 

He also advised Hon. Lady Justice Kanyange to place the Judicial code of conduct in her priority notebook. "We pray that the Lord guides Hon. Lady Justice Kanyange to deliver to the public, use the same experience and intellect to serve the public to their expectation," he said.

HW Lillian Bucyana, the Deputy Registrar of the Court thanked the Justices for taking time away from their busy schedules to make it for the event. 

There was cake cutting and Hon. Lady Justice Kanyange was given a plaque, handed to her by the DCJ for her faithful service.
